During a special session of the Fridays of the Commission that took place on 8 December 2015 at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, different stakeholders involved in ACP-EU relations called for a paradigm shift in the partnership after 2020. The Conference-debate which was organized by FES and the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM), brought together staff members of the African Union Commission, representatives of the regional economic communities (RECs), African and non-African diplomats based in Addis Ababa, researchers and academics, university and college students of Ethiopia, civil society organizations and private sector. The Conference provided a window of opportunity to review the historic partnership between the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) and the European Union, as well as to pave the way for a fruitful cooperation between the two partners after 2020.

In an effort to contribute towards a successful outcome of the Valletta Summit, FES, the Southern African Liaison Office (SALO) and European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) co-hosted a pre-summit seminar in Addis Ababa on the 21st of October 2015. The seminar brought together relevant representatives from the African Union (AU), the EU Delegation to the AU, Representatives of European and African states, UN organisations, experts and civil society organisations to discuss this topic in an informal and constructive manner.

Between the 20th and 22nd of September, FES and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) organized a conference on “The New Geopolitics of Peace Operations II: A Dialogue with the Greater Horn of Africa” The conference is part of a series of dialogue events hosted by the FES and SIPRI that seek to enhance understanding about the future African peace and security landscape by sharing regional African perspectives with international stakeholders. The main objective of the conference was to provide a platform for discussion and debate in order to develop policy recommendations that will lead towards paving a strategic way forward to more peace and security in the Horn of Africa. The conference brought together presenters and participants from government offices, research institutions, regional Institutions (IGAD) and the African Union, as well as representatives from the Egyptian Embassy, German Embassy and Swedish Embassy.

In side event to the 3rd United Nations Financing for Development Summit hosted by the FES on the 12th of July in Addis Ababa, the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation (ICRICT) presented their views on the necessity of a thorough reform of the global tax system. ICRICT members and civil society exchanged views with Jane McCormick, KPMG Head of Tax for Europe, Middle East and Africa and Pascal Saint-Amans, OECD Centre for Tax Policy and Administration.

The Fourth EU–Africa Summit took place in Brussels, Belgium, on 2-3 April 2014. This was the backdrop for the international conference »EU–Africa relations after the fourth summit – Finding common ground«, held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 30 September–1 October 2014, and organised by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), under Chatham House Rules. The two-day roundtable was attended by some 50 participants, including senior officials from the African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU), as well as from EU member states, and representatives of think tanks and civil society organisations (CSO) from both continents. By bringing together selected experts on EU–Africa relations, the conference sought to analyse the outcomes of the fourth summit, discuss ways forward and help to consolidate cooperation between Africa and Europe.

 In recent years, FES has facilitated political dialogue on maritime security policy at the regional level throughout the continent and has produced studies and conducted seminars on maritime security in West and Central Africa as well as in Southern Africa. This seminar that took place in Addis Ababa, 16-17 June 2014, looked at maritime security at the AU and the continental level and aimed at providing a space for practitioners and researchers to exchange ideas on the future of maritime security cooperation on the continent and beyond. In the course of the seminar, participants identified challenges to subsidiarity and coordination between regional and continental (AU) mechanisms and developed specific policy recommendations for the AU, the RECs, Member States, Researchers and Civil Society.

On 6 June 2014, FES and Initative Südliches Afrika (INISA) organized a panel discussion on the current state of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) between the African Regional Communities (RECs) and the European Union. After a keynote by H.E. Ajay Bramdeo, Ambassador for the AU Permanent mission to the EU, six panelists from governmental and non-governmental institutions discussed the current status of the EPA negotiations, and the potential opportunities and risks of EPAs.

On 21–22 November 2013 a regional dialogue meeting of the ‘New Geopolitics of Peace Operations: A Dialogue with Emerging Powers’ project took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The meeting, which was jointly organized by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and FES brought together a range of leading experts, government officials and representatives of international organizations to discuss the future challenges for peace operations and the roles that states from Africa can play in future peacekeeping.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and the European Centre of Development Policy Management (ECDPM) held a conference on 17-18 September 2013 on future perspectives of EU-Africa relations in the run-up to the 2014 Summit that will be held in Brussels on 1-2 April 2014. The conference brought together some 40 senior officials from the African, ACP and EU institutions and member states, as well as participants from think tanks and civil society organisations from both continents. The overall aim of the conference was to address key areas of common concern and interest in the Africa-EU partnership that could contribute to the agenda setting of the 2014 EU-Africa-Summit.

For the second time in 2013, FES and the African Union Commission (AUC), together with the Canadian Embassy invited African Journalists to Addis Ababa for a training workshop, which took place between the 17^th and 19^th of March, and the subsequent coverage of the 21^st African Union (AU) Summit. The workshop consisted of different sessions with expert presentation and discussions. Topics included Pan-Africanism, Peace & Security, the EU-Africa Partnership, AU and the Media, AU and Good Governance. The training brought together 18 journalists from six different countries.

Between the 6th and 8th May 2013, FES, together with the The Southern African Defence and Security Management Network (SADSEM) organized an expert workshop on the topic of African Approaches to Maritime Security”. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss three studies that had previously been undertaken on South, West and East Africa to take stock of recent findings regarding the scale and impact of maritime insecurity and its political dimensions as well as to assess the impact of old and emerging instruments, initiatives, and interventions. It served to discuss and identify a common policy approach, which shall be further discussed in the other regions and at the international level in 2014 and 2015.

Before Heads of State and Government convened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the 20th Summit of the African Union (AU) from 21 to 28 January, 2013, FES and the African Union Commission (AUC) invited journalists and editors from all over Africa to participate in a two day training workshop to prepare them for the coverage of the summit. The training aimed at deepening African Media’s knowledge on the AU transformation process, specific themes of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), Intra-African trade, African global affairs, and on the AU Summit theme - “Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance. The training brought together 18 journalists and editors from nine countries.

Against the backdrop of the 10^th Anniversary of the African Union, the Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR), Cape Town, South Africa, and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), Berlin, Germany, hosted a colloquium in Berlin, from 30 to 31 August 2012, titled “The African Union at Ten: Aspirations and Reality”. The colloquium analysed the AU’s achievements and challenges, and crafted concrete recommendations to strengthen its effectiveness. The meeting considered the history of the AU; reviewed the ten years since the implementation of its peace and security architecture; compared the regional integration efforts of the AU and the European Union (EU); assessed its strategies to achieve socio-economic development; and reviewed the AU’s global role.

For the 2^nd Interparliamentary Dialogue on Implementation and Non-Implementation of Au Decisions and Treaties, FES again partnered with AUC Office of the Legal Counsel and with Oxfam AU Liaison Office. The meeting which took place from 23 to 24 May 2011 in Addis Abeba, aimed at building onto the first Interparliamentary dialogue on the same topic in November 2010. The 2^nd Interparliamentary Dialogue brought together 25 participants, among them 13 Parliamentarians from national, regional and the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), AUC experts, FES staff and other CSO experts.

The International Conference “Overstretched and Overrated? Prospects of Regional Security Policy in Africa and its European Support“ took place at the headquarters of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) in Berlin on 9 and 10 February 2011. Experts from Africa and Europe, decision-makers and representatives of various regional organisations had a very open exchange of views and opinions on the challenges and prospects of regional strategies for peace and security in Africa. At the heart of the dialogue was the debate over the definition and understanding of security and, based on these, requirements applying to regional security architectures and systems. The African Journalists and Editors Training and Capacity Building Program on AU Transformation, APSA and the Coverage of the 16^th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union on the theme – “Towards Greater Unity And Integration Through Shared Values” was held at the media center inside the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa from 21 to 31 January. The training was organized by FES Ethiopia and the Department of Information Communication of the African Union Commission (AUC). It brought together editors and journalists from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Somaliland, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria, Sudan, Mozambique, Madagascar and Mauritius. During the two-day training AU experts were invited to present and discuss five main topics with the journalists - the AU Transformation, the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), the 16th AU Summit, Culture of openness as an African shared value and on coverage of the AU Summit – to prepare the journalists for the coverage of the subsequent summit.
